Ted Gray EVENING WORSHIP SERVICE ----------- Scripture: Matthew 8:1- 17 Sermon: “Wholehearted Gratitude for God’s Redeeming Love” “He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases” - Matthew 8:17b “Wholehearted Gratitude for God’s Redeeming Love” Matthew 8:1-17 I. Among the many healings Jesus performed, three specific acts of healing are mentioned in this passage: 1) A leper is healed by the touch of Jesus (1-4) 2) A servant is healed by the word of Jesus (5-13) 3) Peter’s mother-in-law (along with many others) are healed in order to fulfill prophecy (14-17) II. The healings show: 1) The compassion of Jesus (3, 7, 14-15; Hebrews 4:15 -16) 2) The power of Jesus over all things, including sin (3, 13b, 16; 9:1-7) 3) The necessity of God’s gift of saving faith (2, 13; Eph. 2:8-9) III. Our response: Saving faith in Jesus with heartfelt gratitude that He redeemed us from our sin and “took up our infirmities and carried our diseases” (17; Isaiah 53:4)

Many people want to know God’s will for their lives. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 summarizes a portion of God’s will for each one of us. We are to: 1) Be joyful always (16) 2) Pray continually (17) 3) Give thanks in all circumstances (18) II. Application: Knowing and living out God’s will for our lives necessitates saving faith in Christ alone (John 15:11)

As we gather this Sunday we will spend the day in prayer and learning about prayer. Lord's day 45 of the Heidelberg Catechism begins the final section, dealing with the Lord's Prayer. In the evening our attention will turn to Luke 11.11-13 (especially verse 13) where we learn what Jesus means when He says to Christians that He will give the Holy Spirit to those of us who ask Him.
